In Virginia banking since 1977, Scott has been a community bank CEO for over 35 years. Starting right out of college as a teller, he worked his way to the positions of president and chief executive officer of a community bank, at the age of 30. Community involvement has been a trademark of his career. His involvement over the years has included United Way, Chambers of Commerce, rural health, local law enforcement, and education. He is a former chair of the Virginia Bankers Association and has served 14 years on the Board of the Federal Home Loan Bank of Atlanta, five as its Chairman. He currently serves on the Boards of the Community Bankers Bank in Richmond, the Top of Virginia Chamber of Commerce, Shenandoah Valley Westminster Canterbury and its foundation, Shrine Mont, and the Virginia Bankers Association. He holds a B.A. degree from Rollins College and has participated in a number of banking associated schools.
